Each room has either a comfortable, restful king size or twin beds and all rooms have newly-refurbished en-suite bathroom with either a double shower or a bath with shower over.

Set across the courtyard from the guesthouse, offering the luxury of extra space and privacy is the Dove Cote, with a super king size bed, a spacious lounge area with sofas, flat screen digital television, fridge, a separate dressing room and a beautiful bathroom complete with a corner spa bath.

Set Yourself Up For the day

A traditional Cumbrian breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, black pudding, haggis and fried soda scone.

Choose from a range of fruit juices, cereals, fresh fruit, porridge (served with local honey and cream) and home-baked bread served with local marmalade, preserves and traditionally-made butter.

Or try one of our specialities … Fried Egg Bread with a cream cheese and orange filling, ideal for vegetarians, or creamy scrambled egg with smoked salmon or haddock.

We serve two courses – a main course plus a choice of delicious desserts tea or coffee and mints.

We source local specialities from Carlisle and Longtown Butchers including excellent local beef, traditionally-reared pork, fresh salmon, a choice of appetising chicken dishes and fresh vegetables in season.

What's in a meal?

A typical evening meal might be a leg of succulent local lamb, roasted with garlic and rosemary and served with thyme and onion sauce, gravy, herb roast and new potatoes, orange and honey diced carrots, puree of turnip and parsnip and sliced green beans.

This would be followed by a choice of home-made sweets such as sticky toffee pudding, chocolate torte and orange sauce, creme brulee, summer fruit meringue or our speciality bread and butter pudding with tea or coffee and mints to finish.

We are happy to cater for vegetarians and other special dietary needs and pride ourselves on our reputation for really good food.

Evening meals are available by prior arrangement most evenings, except Sundays, at 7pm.

How To Find Us

Location

Just north of Carlisle and within easy driving distance of both the M6 and M74, Bessiestown Guest House is an ideal base for exploring the Lake District, the Borderlands and Southern Scotland and the Solway and Galloway coasts.

You will find Bessiestown in a magnificent rural setting in Catlowdy, Penton, a small hamlet midway between Gretna Green and Hadrian’s Wall, just north of Carlisle and within easy driving distance of both the M6 and M74.

If you are planning a holiday in this area or if you are on your way to or from Scotland, Bessiestown is ideally placed – convenient for the main routes but also set amidst idyllic countryside.

Bessiestown is only a short drive from Longtown and the M6/M74 motorways and the route is straightforward and well-signposted.

Setting

Carlisle, Keilder Water and the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site are all a short drive away and Gretna Green is close by for the romantics among our guests.

Add to this the idyllic surrounding countryside and birdlife, quiet lanes for cycling and tremendous choice of walking opportunities and Bessiestown Guesthouse could be just the location you need for a holiday break.

We offer a nearby walking trail of about 2 miles which takes you through our beautiful meadows, woodland and local lanes to see something of the scenery and wildlife that surrounds Bessiestown.

There are also plenty of other walks, from family rambles to more strenuous hikes. Bessiestown is convenient for fishing on the rivers Esk and Liddel and golfing at Powfoot, Brampton and Carlisle.

Directions
  • From the south – take Junction 44 from the M6 motorway and follow the A7 to Longtown.
  • From the north – take Junction 22 from the M74 and follow the A6071 to Longtown.
  • Travelling east and west, follow the A6071 to Longtown.
  • From Longtown, take the road between the Bush Hotel and the Spar grocery store, signposted for Catlowdy. After just over 6 miles you come to a T-junction at the Bridge Inn. Take the right hand turn (B6318) for a mile and a half to Catlowdy and Bessiestown is the first drive on the left.
Directions from Carlisle Airport
  • Exit the airport and Turn right 0.8 miles
  • Turn right onto A689 0.3 miles
  • At the roundabout, take the 1st exit and stay on A689 3.4 miles
  • At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit and stay on A689 2.2 miles
  • At the roundabout, take the 5th exit onto A7 1.6 miles
  • Head north on A7 4.4 miles
  • Turn right onto Netherby St 135 feet
  • Head north-east on Netherby St towards Ward St 299 feet
  • Netherby St turns left and becomes Graham St 282 feet
  • Continue onto Netherby Rd 6.3 miles
  • Turn right onto B6318 1.5 miles
  • Turn left 0.1 miles
